ÁNGEL ATIENZA

Flamenco Dancer, Choreographer and Teacher

Born in Morón de la Frontera (Seville, Spain), Ángel Atienza began his artistic training at a very early age, combining formal dance studies with his specialisation in flamenco. He trained under some of the most influential figures in the art form, including Manolete, Mario Maya, Manolo Marín and Goyo Montero, whose teachings helped shape the foundations of his artistic career.

Throughout his career, he has performed with some of Spain’s most distinguished flamenco companies, bringing his artistry to international stages and festivals and taking part in several editions of the Seville Flamenco Biennial.

From 1991 to 1993, he was a member of the Mario Maya Company. Between 1994 and 1996, he joined the original ensemble of the Compañía Andaluza de Danza (Andalusian Dance Company), under Mario Maya’s artistic direction, performing in productions such as De lo flamenco and Réquiem flamenco.

He subsequently continued his career as a solo dancer with the Manuela Carrasco Company, appearing in productions including La raíz del grito, presented at the 8th Seville Flamenco Biennial, and Así baila Sevilla, performed at the 9th edition. These productions took him on extensive international tours.

Renowned flamenco dancer and choreographer Javier Barón also invited him to collaborate in the creation of Hombre de hierro, hombre de bronce, a production presented at the 9th Seville Flamenco Biennial.

Alongside his work with major companies, Ángel developed his career as a solo performer at international flamenco festivals, appearing in Costa Rica and Italian cities such as Florence and Turin, and sharing festival programmes with celebrated artists including Cristina Hoyos, Eva Yerbabuena and Miguel Poveda, among others.

An International Career as a Choreographer

Building on his extensive stage experience, Ángel Atienza has also developed an international career as a choreographer, creating works for dance companies and productions across several countries.

His collaborations include the Mónica Morra Company in Italy, the María Serrano Company, with projects in Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and Taiwan, and the Flamencos de Costa Rica Company.

In Japan, he contributed choreography to the production Momentos Flamencos, while also developing a range of works for his own flamenco company.

These international experiences have allowed him to collaborate with artists from diverse backgrounds, broadening his creative perspective and enriching both his approach to choreography and his understanding of how flamenco can be taught and shared.

Teaching as a Vocation

In 2006, Ángel Atienza co-founded Ados Flamenco School in Seville with Isabel Bayón, establishing a space dedicated to the professional training and promotion of flamenco dance.

This marked the beginning of a new chapter in which teaching became a central part of his career, while he continued to maintain his connection with the stage.

He later took sole responsibility for the project, which became the Ángel Atienza Flamenco School, developing his own teaching methodology centred on technique, musicality, an understanding of movement and individual artistic expression.

During this period, he continued performing in stage productions, including the tribute to Mario Maya, presented at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Seville and at the 2009 Festival de Jerez.

In 2012, he performed in the closing production of the Seville Flamenco Biennial, De la punta a la raíz.

A New Chapter in the Heart of Triana

In 2024, Ángel Atienza opened a new home for the Ángel Atienza Flamenco School on Calle Alfarería, in the heart of Seville’s historic Triana neighbourhood, an area deeply rooted in flamenco tradition.

This new space represents the continuation of an educational project shaped by decades of artistic and teaching experience.

Here, Ángel welcomes students of different levels and nationalities, from those wishing to deepen their understanding of flamenco fundamentals to experienced dancers seeking to refine their technique and artistic interpretation.

His teaching is distinguished by meticulous attention to detail, individual feedback and a commitment to developing expressive, technically grounded dancing with a deep connection to the music.

Flamenco as a Universal Language

His extensive experience as a performer, choreographer and teacher has led him to deliver international flamenco courses and workshops in countries and regions including France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, Japan, Costa Rica, the United States, Hong Kong, Poland and Australia, sharing his personal approach and teaching methodology with flamenco students and professional dancers around the world.

Today, Ángel Atienza continues his work in Seville, combining his dedication to teaching with his ongoing connection to the performing arts.

At the heart of his artistic and educational philosophy lies a belief that has guided him throughout his career:

Flamenco is not simply about learning steps. It is about understanding its language, mastering its technique and discovering your own personal way of expressing it.
